Useful Tips

We strongly recommend that you check out some general Helpful Hints below as well as the information on our Veteran Horse coverage.

Value of horse

This is up to the amount you paid for your horse. If your horse is home bred or has increased in value the sum insured must be agreed with the Underwriters.

With young horses, the value can be increased in line with their training or competition record. We are happy to discuss this with you and to increase the value if justified.

The policy actually covers the sum insured or the current market value whichever is lower, so as a horse ages it is worth checking the value each year to make sure you aren’t insuring it for too high a sum insured.

Age of horse

The normal age limits of our cover is 6 months to 15 years inclusive. For horses aged under 6 months or over 15 years please contact us for a quote.

Death or Theft Cover

You must have this cover if you wish to have vets fee cover.

Provides cover for the amount insured or current market value, whichever is lower, if your horse dies from natural causes or is put down for humane reasons to prevent immediate or incurable suffering (see policy for more information and definitions).

A vets certificate and/or veterinary history may be required a) for horses valued over £5,000 when they are first insured or b) for all values , if they have been owned but uninsured for over 6 months.

Permanent Incapacity

Cover is provided in case your horse suffers an accident or illness which prevents him/her fulfilling the purpose for which they were insured.

Cover is 100% if you elect to have the horse put down or 75% if you elect to keep the horse as a pet.

A current vet¹s certificate or a copy of your horse’s veterinary clinical history or proof of existing insurance cover, will be required for horses valued £3,000 and over.

For new purchases,  a 5 stage vets certificate is required for horses valued £3,000 or over .

If £10,000 or over we also require a report on the xrays of all four feet (to include the Navicular bones), fetlocks, hocks and stifles.

Vets Fees

Choose between up to £3,000 per occurrence, excess £125 per claim or up to £2,500 per occurrence, excess £300 per claim or, if your horse is valued over £1500, up to £5,000 per occurrence, excess £300 per claim. Cover includes alternative therapies upon recommendation from your vet.

NB: There is a 25% co-insurance clause on the costs of MRI or CT Scans and a 50% co-insurance on bone (scinitgraphy) scans. This means that you will have to pay 25% or 50% as appropriate towards the cost of these scans on top of your excess. Please see our Key Facts statement under Policies for a brief synopsis of the main exclusions or the main Horse & Carriage Policy for full conditions

Under the Horse & Carriage Policy: An option provided by Carriagehouse to enable you to pay the least amount of premium for a good level of cover is  a limit of either £2,500 or £5,000 per occurrence with an excess of £300 per claim. The higher excess level does mean that the premium for the £2,500 cover is approximately £80 less per year than the standard £3,000 vets fee cover, per horse.

Legal liability

Third Party cover to £1,000,000 per occurrence. If you require a higher limit of £2,000,000 or £5,000,000 please contact the office for a quote.

Personal Accident

Cover to £10,000 for accidental death or a permanent disability, as a result of a riding/driving accident with the insured horse.

Cover includes up to £1,500 towards dental fees. There is a £100 excess on dental fee claims.

Tack

Cover includes accidental damage, fire damage and theft provided the theft occurs from a securely locked building. All saddlery items over £500 need to be specified on your schedule; otherwise the maximum value payable is £500 per item. Carriages and harness are on an agreed value basis, and this usually is based on the current market value. On high value items, a copy of the purchase invoice or a valuation may be requested in order to agree the value with you. The standard quote online is for £1000 but of you require a higher limit, please contact the office.

No Claims Bonus

This is accumulative for each year your horse has been been insured by you with us and not being the subject of a claim for veterinary treatment.

The maximum available is 3 years.

If your horse has needed any veterinary treatment, this must be declared prior to incepting a policy. Certain conditions may apply depending on the treatment received. Please contact the Carriagehouse office for further details. See policy wordings for full details regarding the cover provided.

If you would like further information and/or a more detailed quotation, please e-mail us or ring the office.
